Hotel Riu Funana - All Inclusive

Was a little worried after reading some reviews but there was no need. Hotel was exactly as described and expected. Stayed at Karamboa in Boa Vista before and this hotel very similar but a little less grand which is expected as a 4 plus rating rather than 5. Yes it could do with updating but the hotel and rooms were clean and had everything we needed. Food was good & lots of choice and good selection of drinks. Staff work extremely hard and very friendly. Definitely recommend

Still here but writing before we leave so I don’t forget :) We stayed at the RIU Funana in November 2024 for 11 nights in total. We have really enjoyed our stay and would absolutely come back! The staff are incredible and nothing was ever too much for them. Having the Tui rep on site has also been handy at times although we didn’t book anything with them. We did 2 excursions including an island tour which was booked through Prince who you will meet on your way to the beach and another which was the buggy tour that we booked through get your guide - people who had booked through TUI were on our excursion so they definitely use the same company and attend the same sessions as those who booked elsewhere. Some of our favourite things about the hotel were the staff at the restaurants and bars, the housekeeping was done to a high standard every day, the pool area, the different restaurants and without a doubt the animation team! The animation team are working all day to keep everyone entertained and bring amazing energy to everything they do. We attended both the neon party and the white party and both were amazing! The effort that goes into these parties and the decoration of the stage area is something to be appreciated. There is a well hidden sports bar that is open 24/7. It is quite cool (temperature) in there and also quieter so easier to get a drink than in some of the other bars. It is at the back of the stage area down the left side of the bar that is visible. Food - we had absolutely no issues with food at all. My partner is 27 with the tastebuds of a 4 year old and was still able to eat well during breakfast, lunch and dinner. The mambana restaurant does appear to attract flies more than the others so this is something to be aware of but sadly not much they can do about this. There was a satisfaction survey conducted by management during our stay and I suggested that they could cover the food with lids to prevent flies, hopefully this is something that will be implemented in the near future. Me and my partner did get upset stomachs for maybe a day and a half but we think this is more to do with food we ate out on a tour and also to do with the heat, eating more and drinking fizzy drinks non stop. I have absolutely no concerns that this was caused by the hotel as we have done 10 nights at the time of writing this and we have been fine the rest of the time. But again, upset stomachs can happen anywhere when you combine buffets, all inclusive bar and heat. If I was being picky, the only thing I would change about the hotel is the location. We went out of the hotel to Algodoeiro Beach (where the Tui and Melia are located) and found this to be a much better area in terms of the beach access so if this is a big thing for you, I would consider one of the Melia or Tui hotels. Currently Staying here for 10 nights. The hotel is definitely not what I expected. I have never been to a RIU hotel before but assumed they were all gorgeous, and was really looking forward to it. Was so disappointed to pay £4800 for 3 people for 10 nights here. The rooms are in dire need of some tlc to be a 4T rating, flaking paint on the balcony rails, toilet door lock held together with a piece of card....we are a family of 3 (17 Yr old daughter) Staying in one room, however the room has a very strange layout, with nowhere private to get dressed. The only private areas are the toilet and shower cubicle, so hubby has to go on the balcony every time daughter gets changed, which is getting tiresome now. Towels threadbare at times. The whole hotel seems to have a drainage problem as there seems to be an intermittent bad smell all the time. The food is ok, a very wide variety so no complaints but very repetitive so gets a little boring. The restaurants that you book are a set menu, which is a little misleading, with the Asian one being a self service buffet, again misleading. The cocktails and soft drinks are disgusting, with no option to buy named brands. Animation team are excellent, they work extremely hard and are good fun. All the staff are extremely pleasant and hardworking. Cleaners are excellent, room cleaning excellent. Pools nice, although the pool bar has a dreadful damp smell all the time. . I have been laid up with a bug for 48hrs, and my sister is the same, which is not necessarily the hotels fault, as bugs happen, particularly in places with lots of people, especialky little ones touching food etc. That said I have heard of 2 people this week who have been in hospital on a drip due to bugs, which indicates that something is going around. Generally not what I was expecting for a RIU 4T hotel, you live and learn.

We had a lovely stay at Funana. The weather was good, although windy and cloudy in the evenings, it was a welcome break from the heat. The pools were slightly chilly, but equally refreshing, especially to cool down the many mosquito bites!! Those little things appeared to be immune to all the different sprays etc we had!! The food was brilliant for all ages in the buffets and specialty restaurants. Drinks were good, it would have been great to have dark or spiced rum, but many other choices. The water park is great for all ages, and the children's pool was great by the water park. The sea was lovely on the days not red flagged, and great to have a bar on the beach. The rooms are traditional decor along with the rest of the hotel, but cleaned daily with lovely towel art. The entertainment team work so hard and know just the right level of encouragement to gain participation without being pushy. The evening shows are good, the white party was EPIC! Santa Maria is lovely, get out of the hotel and enjoy some local hospitality. We did the shark visit and it was good but i think a whole island tour would be better value.

Hotel and food was very good. Only downside was the wardrobe ‘bead curtain’ which must be difficult to clean and spoilt the overall look.
