Lydgate House Hotel

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary and we’re so pleased we chose to stay at Lydgate. We don’t live far away but the beautiful surroundings made us feel like we were a million miles away from the normal stress of life. The relaxing and laid back nature of the house and the way the wonderful staff run it make it feel like a home from home. Yet they also manage to make it feel like a luxurious break away where no request is too much or too troublesome. It’s a real skill. We loved the surroundings and our huge room with wonderful views. Due to the size of our room it was difficult to keep it really warm (although it may have felt cooler after sitting in the lounge by the amazing wood burner), but we loved the fact the staff were clearly aware it could feel a bit cooler and provided hot water bottles. All the little touches throughout the house were fantastic. And the food! It was absolutely outstanding. A varied menu and all cooked to perfection! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a stay here. We look forward to coming back later in the year, especially when it’s warm enough for a dip in the river.

After reading another persons review on Facebook regarding their afternoon tea experience at Lydgate hotel, I thought it would be nice to take my elderly friend who is unfortunately in the first stages of dementia, but still enjoys going out. We live about an hours drive away, but it’s a lovely scenic drive across the moors, to the quiet little village of Postbridge. We were a little early so decided to stop in the car park and visit the National Park Visitor Centre and took a stroll down to the famous clapper bridge. The drive down to Lydgate was along a lane with an avenue of trees at which the quaint little hotel is at the end of. You could almost mistake it for a house as it’s so cute. We were met at the door by Kelly whom I had spoken to when I rang and booked our afternoon tea. Immediately she was welcoming and friendly and very good with my friend Penny, as I had already mentioned during our phone conversation, had dementia. The weather was superb that day so Kelly asked if we would prefer to sit outside on the balcony, which we did. The views were absolutely stunning. Our tea/coffee were served in bone china cups, very fitting. The afternoon tea was delicious and consisted of a variety of lovely sandwiches, quiche, scones jam and cream and three, yes three mouth watering cakes. Kelly made sure we were okay and that everything was to our satisfaction, which of course it was, but it was lovely to be asked. She conversed with us several times and kept us topped up with tea. She was a lovely pleasant lady and made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at Lydgate House Cottage. With walks and cycle routes direct from the door, it was ideally positioned for us and our son. The cottage was cosy and very well equipped, although anyone over 6ft would find the upstairs bedroom/bathroom a bit of a challenge, but this is mentioned in the description of the property. Despite its position in the middle of Dartmoor, local towns and villages are easily reached by car (or on foot!). John, Sarah and Kelly were most welcoming. We hope to visit again soon.

Great location for numerous Dartmoor walks, very comfortable, clean and warm cottage and excellent staff to greet us and look after us if we needed help or advice. Very enjoyable stay and we hope to return soon, thanks to all involved for your hospitality.

This is an amazing place and hidden gem, Jon, Sarah and Kelly are fantastic host, nothing is to much for them, breakfast is amazing with lots to choose from and freshly cooked to order. Evening dinner was scrumptious! Jon is very knowledgeable about the area and places to visit. The rooms are spacious, airy clean and beautiful furnished. We had a surprise upgrade due to being on our honeymoon. We'll definitely be back!

Just returned from our annual holiday at this fantastic hotel , John, Sarah and Kelly are fantastic host nothing is to much trouble for them .we had evening meals every night there is a great choice and so tasty , breakfast was also very good too . The scenery and sound of the river flowing down the valley is just so relaxing, already booked for next year
