An amazing building with historical connections. The bathroom was good, with deep bath and good mains water pressure. But the bedroom needed serious update. No mains lighting in the bedroom or hallway, just plug in side lights by the bed and a standard lamp on old fashioned round pin plug in hall. I had to use a torch to move round the bedroom. The lift wasn't working, although the membet of staff managed some manoeuvre to get it working which I couldn't replicate. Restaurant was ok but the standard of a reasonable pub, not fine dining. Menu was a bit odd - steak and chips, fish and chips style or ”venison pudding” which was a huge stodgy pastry with over cooked dry meat inside. Breakfast buffet was very nice, but too dark in that room also. Six jams and marmalades in open jars with no way of knowing what they were, and no little dishes to put them in to take to your seat. Service at breakfast had to be sought out, no one in site. Breakfast bacon was inedible - cooked previously then reheated. Overall, it is a fascinating place but needs a big overall and review of what they are offering.

In terms of value for money, I found the pricing to be reasonable considering the convenience and comfort provided by the hotel. The hotel was mediocre, with no eating facilities available, the room was cold, especially the bathroom. There must have been complaints as there was a heater in the room, which just did the job at best. Breakfast was excellent, and the lady serving the food was lovely, hence the score given.
