From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, two nights, we enjoyed every part of our experience. I would’ve loved to give them 6 out of 5! The lodge has just 5 rooms - ours was Victoria and was delightfully furnished, well equipped and very comfortable. James and James welcomed us by name at the door on arrival. They make a great hosting team and offered us lots of advice such as where to visit and even where to sit to watch the blue penguins! Their home and business is beautifully presented in period style. Guests have use of the drawing room, snug and billiard room as well as the dining room. “James the chef” provides exceptional breakfasts with such delights as honey & honeycomb from their own hive and homemade jams, and homemade bread. The shared breakfast table is covered with delightful homemade dishes and you can order delightful cooked food as well. Another nice touch is offering a drink and canapés in the early evening! We were made to feel really at home in their home and the shared breakfast table enabled us to meet the other lovely guests.

This place is fabulous. The two James have created a wonderful interior, with many items from their time in China. The rooms are beautifully appointed, and the food on offer is amazing. The dinner is an experience to be savoured, and should not be missed.

Superb, top-class lodge. Warm welcome. Room: The Park Room, very beautiful, very spacious and very tastefully decorated. Breakfast, taken in the company of other guests, is as copious as it is excellent and made with quality products, some of which are homemade. A magnificent place. Everything is just perfect.

Where do I start. This was easily the best accommodation of our 5 week NZ adventure. James and James have created a sumptuous country house hotel in Oamaru that is truly faultless. As hosts they were always there to help, breakfasts were a true feast (pretty much all home made) and our dinner worthy of the finest restaurants! We were sorry to leave. Thanks James x2

James & James are generous and welcoming guests and custodians of this amazing property. Think English stately home and you will not be far wrong. The history and charm of the house need to be seen to be believed. Great room with the best shower of our trip! Breakfast cooked to order and enjoyed with the other guests in the beautiful dining room. Great to meet Milo & George the resident dogs.
