Margaret - Hôtel Chouleur

A beautifully peaceful oasis in a great central location. We had a lovely stay at Margaret Chouleur and the front of house staff who we met were very helpful and friendly. We had been upgraded to stay in the duplex apartment which was a nice touch, but we found it to have a few things wrong which were a shame, but didn't ruin our experience. For example the air con units were broken in the lounge, the kitchen was poorly equipped and cupboards could do with updating, the kitchen tap leaked in an interesting way. The bedroom and bathroom were very spacious, clean and well decorated and bed very comfy. However, the upper floor is accessed through a VERY steep and potentially dangerous staircase, and we struggled with the suitcases and had to be very careful whenever we used the stairs. Not suitable for older guests or those with younger children. When we returned to the hotel after we had been out about 10pm and wanted a drink from the bar. Whilst the lovely receptionist was happy to help she didnt know her way around a bar, and wasnt able to make cocktails, consequently we felt we were a bit of a nuisance. That said, we had a lovely stay, a great breakfast and would definitely stay there again.

I’m so pleased I decided to have a 3 night stop here. The hotel is wonderful and the staff even better. All of the ladies just seemed to appear when I was wondering about something. It was very pleasant just sitting quietly in the courtyard or garden areas with a coffee of a drink. The staff would appear and ask what I’d like which was terrific. My room was glorious and so quiet. I also ate at Gigi which was great however the breakfast was a true delight. I’ve been traveling for 2 months and it’s the best scrambled eggs with crispy bacon ever !! Such a restful spot in Nîmes. Step out the door and you have everything to see and do. Certainly go and see the Pont du Gard & obviously all that Nimes has, the Arena, gardens etc. Thanks to all at the Margaret Hotel for looking after me during my stay. I’d loved to return one day !!

We booked online and hotel exceeded our expectations! Just lovely. Exquisite building that has had modern hotel rooms inserted without destroying the building. Gear central location.

This is a beautiful property, well situated and beautifully decorated and we had a room - really a suite! - that exceeded our expectations. It was the kind of room that made me want to stay in all evening and pretend it was my home, not even needing to explore Nimes outside our four walls - a beautiful bedroom, sitting room and luxurious bath (but only a tub, no shower). HOWEVER, this first impression was soured by our overnight experience. We did not know we were situated with an adjoining wall to a loud bar until it was late in the evening - and impossible to sleep with the thumping of music coming through the wall. When morning came, my partner took a bath and everything was fine. I went to take mine - remember, no shower - and discovered the water was ice cold. Hotel maintenance came and said all the water heaters were working - he did not know what the problem was but he could not solve it. So after a crummy night of sleep in this beautiful place, and no ability to clean up the next day, we continued our trip and moved on to our next destination. Given the night club, lack of sleep and no ability to shower, we thought it was reasonable to ask for some sort of accommodation and asked for half of our room cost to be refunded. The girls at the front desk were apologetic and lovely, but clearly not empowered to take any real action. They promised to share our experience with the owner/manager who would make this decision. Weeks have passed, and we have received no word from her and have to assume we have come and gone and she doesn’t care. Maybe she will care now that I have posted this review.

Xmas at this hotel was a delight. The hotel is elegant and full of great treats for an unmatched experience. It has a top quality Michelin restaurant, and if the "devil is in the details", this hotel aces it! The scents, the flavors, the ambience are exceptional! The French are the masters of sensory delights. If you want to have an unforgettable elegant french experience, this is a great affordable option. The location is superb, right in the heart of beautiful Nimes. Although the hotel has no parking, there is a public parking lot at a walking distance. Service is great, room is visited twice a day to adjust it to sleep mode, and front desk receptionist was very kind, fully bilingual (english/french). No complaints at all, will return and/or try to visit other group hotels.
