Hotel Review: Ilsington Country House Hotel, Dartmoor We recently stayed one night at the Ilsington Country House Hotel, set in the beautiful Dartmoor countryside. The property itself is a lovely, traditional building with well-maintained gardens and plenty of on-site parking. The reception area is bright and airy, and there are several welcoming public seating areas with sofas and easy chairs. The hotel also offers a bistro, restaurant, small pool, gym, and spa facilities. We booked a suite as my husband has a head injury and requires rest during the day, particularly around lunchtime, so we needed a separate lounge area. We were grateful to be given an early check-in by one hour, which allowed him to go straight to bed. The suite had a nice view from both windows, and we appreciated that the bedroom window could be opened for fresh air. However, there were several disappointing aspects of our stay that I feel are worth mentioning. Firstly, the lounge area in the suite had only two chairs, both of which were hard and uncomfortable—something that could be improved for guests who need to spend time there. There was no fridge in the suite, although there were tea and coffee-making facilities and a glass bottle of water with a swing stopper, which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, the cleanliness of the suite was questionable as we found a pair of dirty socks left by a previous guest in the bedroom. There was also no visible way to control the heating in the room. Due to a large restaurant booking at 6:30pm, we were told the restaurant could not accommodate us until 7:45pm, despite it opening at 6pm. As this was too late for us, we opted to eat in the bistro instead. While my dietary request (risotto without mushrooms) was accommodated, the dish wasn’t to my taste, and it was cleared away without anyone checking whether I had enjoyed it. I had also hoped to book a spa treatment the next day (which was priced around £180) and asked if I could use the spa facilities beforehand while I waited. I was told this would incur an additional charge, which felt excessive given the cost of the treatment. I requested that the manager consider waiving the spa access fee as I had specifically chosen the hotel for its spa, and would be on my own the next day while my husband attended an appointment. Despite following up, I never received a response, so I did not proceed with the booking. I also asked about a late checkout, and while I understand if the hotel was fully booked, I was told "no" without further discussion. I checked availability before leaving and noted that our suite was still available to book, which made the flat refusal and lack of communication regarding the spa feel dismissive and unaccommodating. Breakfast was another mixed experience. I was not offered toast, although I heard other tables being offered it. When I went to get orange juice and found the container empty, I asked a staff member if she could bring me a glass. I was told, "I’ll top it
