Hotel Troy

To start with the positives: the hotel is set away from the main road, along a small track and is in its own gardens, so after a long flight you can walk around in relatively natural surroundings. Our executive room was large, with a nice view towards the gardens and bed was comfortable. Staff were friendly. The hotel is close to the entrance to the National Park. The negatives: the executive room is just above the indoor restaurant and outside eating area and the thin glass in the windows lets in a lot of noise. The shower head was hanging loose and sprayed water everywhere, including over the top of the shower cubicle and throughout the bathroom. We pointed this out, but nothing was done about it and past comments on internet imply that this problem has existed for a long time. A group of young Americans shrieked from breakfast to after dinner whenever they were in the hotel. They were hysterical, shouting and laughing in a really unnatural way, exciting comment from other guests but no reaction from the hotel staff. On the last evening the slightly rotund middle age gentleman who looks like a head waiter accompanied us to our room, entered, uninvited and stood expectantly in the centre of the room waiting for a tip. We found this behaviour extremely inappropriate, to say the least.

This was the third time we brought a group to Hotel Troy. The management is very friendly & eager to make the experience one of the best. The staff are always kind & want to help. The food is top notch. Highly recommend for small or large groups!

Before writing this review I tried to contact the owner /MD to inform her of my possible review. This hotel was to be the worst in Nairobi. Our ´deluxe´twin room was about as far from deluxe as you can get. The window didn´t close, nor could it be forced because the glass was broken. The TV didn´t work even though a young man came up to repair it. There was no kettle or safe in the room, and the two double beds as advertised on their web site were singles with one bedside table, no bedside lights and holes in the mosquito nets. The shower was so hot it was impossible to use. The receptionist offered us the use of another room to shower in. On investigation, our room didn´t have cold water connected the pipe was hanging loose. We were finally moved to a two bedroomed cottage in the grounds, which was better. Still very dirty, two dining chairs (how 4 people could eat I have no idea) and dangerous at night as the outside lights didn´t work. As the wifi didn´t work we were given a mobile router, which was removed the next day, when this was queried at approximately 14.30 we were told it must be housekeeping. At 17.15 it was returned having been used somewhere else, which the staff knew perfectly well. Breakfast was a disaster the first two days, the menu for the restaurant, which still had Christmas decorations hanging up, was nothing like the one on their web site and the place was filthy, with electrical cables everywhere, broken window panes, missing lamp shades, bulbs, kitchen cupboards I wouldn´t have stored fertiliser in and an air of tiredness and being unloved. I have pictures but prefer to share them with the owner/MD before sharing them on here.The receptionist on check in/check out was lovely and we felt sorry for her having to deal with the problems.

Pros: the front desk staff were really nice and quite helpful. When we were pretty disappointed with our cottage they immediately changed us to 2 bedrooms in the hotel, which were of a higher standard. Breakfast was fine. Location was quiet. Cons: our cottage was pretty bad. There was a hole in a bathroom window. Many of the windows didn’t lock. We couldn’t lock the main Door when we were there. There were many ants. The bathrooms were not very clean. It maybe was that we just had bad luck with the cottage as many other guests enjoyed their cottage experience. Who knows. Also I recommend you use Uber for all transportation. The driver for the place, although he is truly very nice, does cost slot so we only used him for back and forth to the airport.
