The host is great but the trick of the Trip.com which bought the room from *********** and not communicated with the Bungalow and they give our room for another guess.

Accès uniquement par bateau. La route étant souvent impraticable même en 4/4… Nous n’avons pas pu profiter de notre réservation payée d’avance et non remboursée, car une fois arrivé à Nong Khiaw, il nous a été impossible d’atteindre par téléphone les gérants du guesthouse : personne ne décrochait (on nous a dit après coup : panne d’électricité et du réseau mobile de ce village uniquement ?!?!)… Je le redis à nouveau : L’accès à ce lieu se fait uniquement en bateau (!!!) Nous avons dû trouver en urgence un autre guesthouse :/ Je n’avais jamais vécu cela avant au cours de mes nombreux voyages… Décus… Oui, mais le village est très paisible.

The owner was friendly at first, but everything changed when it came time to pay. For less than two hours with a tractor, we were charged 500,000 kip (~$23), which is more than double a fair price — and he even admitted to overcharging us. When we calmly questioned it, his attitude shifted completely. He became aggressive, raised his voice, and acted in an intimidating way. The situation escalated to the point where we felt uncomfortable and chose to walk away rather than continue the confrontation. There was no transparency in pricing at any stage, and it felt like a clear middleman markup rather than a fair deal. We were also discouraged from renting bikes elsewhere, which added to the pressure and made the whole experience feel untrustworthy. After we left, the situation got worse: my card was charged an additional $25 two hours later for a “lost key” — a key that was never provided to us in the first place. This charge was not authorized or agreed upon at any time. Overall, this experience felt dishonest and poorly handled. Avoid staying here — the priority seems to be maximizing what can be charged rather than treating customers fairly. Based on other reviews, this doesn’t appear to be a one-off situation.

The room’s are great, but the owner treats everything as a potential sale to try and squeeze more money, seems the village dislike her because she makes a scene when she discovers you have bought anything from the village that she doesn’t own. Muang Ngoi is very charming however, despite her efforts.

This is not a nice place to stay and has been the worst in our otherwise incredible month of travelling so far. The owner is not friendly and it sounds like loathed by the villagers here. Do NOT stay at EITHER Riverside NOR Sunset. They are next to each other and owned by the same individual; Penny. And Penny’s restaurant (3,7 Google rating - see the lowest reviews there). She is a proper hustler, wants to know everything you are doing, where you’re going. Everything is a sale and it’s just too much. Have complained to *********** as it’s very unclear that rooms have no AC then she wants to charge you the cost of the room on arrival to give you the remote. After 3 years travelling haven’t seen this disguise for additional money in about 2 years. She is rude and actually just a very unpleasant person! Even marked up the price versus someone who said it was $5 a week ago online just because when we wanted to pay. She doesn’t realise that being a good human makes westerners want to spend their money but within five minutes of meeting her she’s someone you don’t want to give a penny more to! Just dropped 52 million kip on our next hotel for 5 nights and would’ve spent a lot more at hers had she been nice - she doesn’t ‘get it’s. Anyway for sensible westerners - remember there is YouTube for the AC which is in the room LOL 😏 Icing on cake is she can’t even spend the money to get curtains that cover the windows so be prepared for 5.30am rise and shine! Covers half the window.

We booked for 1 night via a booking engine while heading north up the river. Reviews on there said it was next to the boat dock- it’s actually a ＜10 min walk along the village street. We were shown to a room in a modern block set slightly back from the river front bungalows. It was on the 1st floor so had a river and Mountain View over the bungalow roofs and a shared balcony rather than a private one in the bungalows. Not sure why others off our boat got a bungalow- there was only one type of room available on the booking engine and they used the same as us. Maybe as we were staying only 1 night? The room was a good size, clean and had a comfy bed. No need for the fan as it was chilly at night in late January. The hot water worked if you didn’t turn it on fully. The walls were quite thin so you could hear neighbours coughing etc. In general the room was ok but a little expensive for Laos. The owners (European and local) speak good English which is unusual for Laos but they seemed a little distracted (they own a few businesses in the village). In summary, it was clean and comfy enough but for rural Laos $15 would have been a fairer price.

We hebben hier een fantastisch verblijf gehad. Vanuit onze balkons hadden we een verbluffend uitzicht op het karstgebergte en de rivier, de kamers waren charmant met goede airco en ruime badkamers. De eigenaar heeft voor ons de bootreis georganiseerd van Muang Khua , en de volgende dag de boot & bus naar Luang Prabang. Dat was voor ons heel fijn omdat we zo niet afhankelijk waren van de vroege boot uit Muang Khua. Kortom, een absolute aanrader!

Les chambres au dessus du bras de la rivière, les balcons, les hamacs, le super breakfast… parfait. Reste des détails : la difficulté à trouver le propriétaire, l’absence de bouteille d’eau dans la chambre, pas de café ni thé basiques à disposition… dommage
