As part of an Australian tour party, we recently spent one night at the Oceans Hotel in Mossel Bay South Africa. As we drove in we could see that this hotel is old and requires maintenance. Even the signage located below the pitched roof was flaking and starting to fade. This hotel has rated itself as 3 stars and if they are serious, they should bring in an independent hotel reviewer. I thought I might be a bit harsh with my 2 out of 5 star rating, but I sought a collective view from my fellow group members and some even went as low as 1.5 stars. It’s well below what we experience in our home country. I’ll start with the positives; the staff are friendly and accomodating when reporting issues, the bed is comfortable, the on-site bar is relatively cheap (however will not accept eftpos payments below 100 Rand) and the restaurant food is ok. Now the negatives; the rooms are old and outdated, the shower is open and water runs along the bathroom floor, the shower floor and wall tiles have mould, the back ‘barn doors’ need a paint and there are gaps surrounding the door frame, the wall mounted cable channels are falling apart allowing electrical cords to be exposed, our ceiling fan did not work on arrival so a maintenance person arrived and managed to get it going but only on the lowest and slowest setting and during the night it stopped, rooms were hot and humid with no air conditioning (they gave up an electric portable fan when we asked), the pool water was cloudy and certainly not inviting and finally if your expecting a darkened room forget it as the curtains do not have pelmets. Overall, a very disappointing experience and not to our expectations.
