We had a bit of a mixed bag with our stay here. Maybe we were just unlucky. Some aspects very good, some really bad. We stayed here 2 nights to attend the Goresbridge Horse sales on a recommendation from a friend. It is a close drive from the sales. The hotel itself has lovely décor, lovely reception/communal areas, a huge car park and was in a beautiful location. On arrival we were shown to our room that reeked of cigarette smoke. Literally, we were blasted with it as soon as the door opened (could smell it faintly in the little walkway to the room). Clearly the last occupants had been smoking in there and the hotel had not noticed, which was a bit shocking. We are non smokers and told the man showing us in, who said he had no sense of smell, that there was no way we could sleep in there. If they had only cleaned/aired/dehumified the room properly that morning (we did not check in until late afternoon) they could have just sorted it out and we would probably not have noticed. I have never refused to sleep in a hotel room in my life and I travel a lot, but this was really extreme. The nice man showing us the room was pleasant enough and took us back to reception and see what they could do re other rooms. This caused a huge amount of bother and time as initially they said the hotel was completely full. They then eventually found us another room on the ground floor but it was next to the noisy restaurant and bar, where a wedding party was going on. When we opened the curtains we found that the large ground floor bedroom windows were connected to the large restaurant patio beside the smoking areas – so if we had had our curtains open at any time we would have been face to face with the people sitting there chatting/smoking. We said this was also unacceptable. We got to the point of asking for a refund and trying to phone other hotels in the area. We had been travelling all day and were exhausted. Eventually they found us a quieter room upstairs, which was fine. It was in fact an upgraded room and was very lovely. However, when we left the room, our key cards no longer worked to let us back in. This happened more than once during our stay as it seemed the system did not update us as being in that room. Each time we had to walk the long walk back to reception, complain to unconcerned/unapologetic staff who seemed to struggle to sort it out. One time when they said the fixed it we had to walk up twice and back again as we still couldn’t get back in. No one was particularly apologetic. At 6.30am on our first morning the fire alarm went off waking us up and causing us to evacuate our room. It eventually stopped and apparently was set off by mistake. We were never apologised to about this either and it wasn’t even acknowledged by staff when we asked about it. Other than this, the hotel was very nice. The surrounding area was a beautiful picturesque village with stunning walks along the river. The evening restau
