Stepping in to the hotel I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist. I guess she was the one who arranged the towels artistically on the bed - nice. As I went up the stairs I noticed the disgustingly dirty carpet, & was greeted with the overpowering smell of cheap air freshener. As I opened the bedroom door I was hit with a wall of air freshener, mixed with the (very) cold air rushing in from the wide open window, all mixing with the overwhelming stench of "drains" - hence the air freshener & the open window. I had stepped in to Tracey Emin's latest immersive arts experience "The 5hyte Hotel". It was so realistic - the black mould in the bedroom & the bathroom. The stinking shower drain, that smelt so bad I couldn't even take a shower. The dangerous light fitting next to the shower. The 2 radiators that didn't work. The cracking, peeling plaster. The filthy carpet. The broken furniture. The curtains that were too short for the window. The mashup of wall paint. The list goes on, & on, & on. NB The towels & sheets were nice & clean. The mattress topper was clean - apart from the horrible stain!! What really make Emin's work stand out is the detail - the empty meat packaging in the bin! The 3 *** & AA sign at the front door - nice touch to read "self accredited" lofl!! Sadly, this was not an art installation, it was real life. Shockingly bad. What could/should have been a nice, clean, small, basic room was a disgusting health risk, that makes me ashamed to think, as a Yorkshireman, that visitors to the sacred cricket ground of Headingly. may well stay at this hovel (no offence to hovels). This "hotel" should be closed down!
