I recently stayed at the Nishiyama Ryokan while in Kyoto for three nights, and had an absolutely wonderful time there. The staff were very courteous and welcoming, greeting me with tea while the room was being prepared. They also informed me of any special events (tea ceremonies, a small koto concert) planned for the day. Though I could only speak simple phrases in Japanese, they have English-speaking staff and there were no issues with communication. The room itself was fantastic, well-kept and furnished in traditional Japanese style, yet also with modern amenities. Conveniently close to a metro station near city hall, the location has many options for shopping and meals in the surrounding area. A short train ride connects one to major points of interest in the city, with a transfer at Nijo station getting one to Kyoto station for the Shinkansen. As for breakfast, they provided an option of either Japanese or Western meals, and I was quite impressed with their Japanese selection: a centerpiece dish (boiled tofu one morning, small meats & vegetables with a personal fryer the next) with sides of rice, fruit, salad, egg, fish, and miso soup. Everything was delicious, and the hostess patiently explained any items of importance. Overall I was delighted with my stay with Nishiyama Ryokan, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for more traditional accommodations.
