Arriving there was no mean feat (without car-navigation system forget it!), but the isolation of the hotel is one its asset. The view from the bedrooms is simply breathtaking: in the middle of a thick forest, on a hill, you can see the sea and even the Sakurajima volcano, some 50kms away… The hotel itself was probably of the luxury type…..40 years ago, with large entrance hall, restaurants, bar, and 2 empty swimming pools! The well-preserved 70s design and “swiss-style” building add to the uniqueness and charm of the place. The room was large (tatamis bedroom big enough for three, a separate seating/coffee table area, a wooden bathtube…) and well equipped. With a copious breakfast (sandwich/hot drinks) included, this was a very good value for money. But the best feature lays in its superb rotenburo, overlooking the forest! Because there is not much to do (appart from bathing, sleeping, eating and enjoying a great view) the Kirishima Sanjo hotel is a great –and cheap- place to rest and get away from the city.
