Back of Beyond - Wellness Retreat

Beautifully situated spacious accommodation with an extensive adjacent lagoon on which one can partake in traditional fishing charters with locals or just enjoy the ambience. Another nearby lagoon offers incredible diversity in birdlife and our guide was exceptional. Another local trip included nesting turtles at a turtle conservation centre whilst at home a masseur offered marvellous service. We were totally spoiled by the lovely staff and delicious food whilst enjoying this relaxing venue, the Wellness Retreat.

We were a group of several families and Back of Beyond, Kahandamodera was the ideal place for us. It has several cottages scattered throughout the property and we could all meet up in the common areas and the pool and dine together, but whenever we wanted a bit of peace and quiet, we could go to our individual cottages. It rained most of the time we were there, but it did not dampen our spirits as we could really spend time together. The snacks and juices that were constantly provided by the staff and the sumptuous meals also added to our good spirits.

Nice location and friendly staff. Very good concept. I have been to back of beyond Pedurangala around 2017 or 2016. This location is not very clean and may needed to staff better. I have lived in Sri Lanka very long time, involved in projects in Shinghraja during my university day. I expect more clean, inside the accommodation.

A long-planned getaway to withdraw to the heart of nature. BoB properties is just that - the back of beyond! We had a splendid time interacting with the goats on the property and the reward of a fantastic massage - easily one of the best I have had. The meals prepared by Wasantha and served by Chandana are simple but tasty and they do go out of their way to please your requirements. I would strongly recommend the local fare of which most is sourced from their own gardens. The weather gods were a little unkind as it rained all day andthus put paid to our plans of an early-morning boat ride and an evening walk on the private beach. That would have to be on our next visit. There are many trees on the property (most planted by Yohan himself). Not named on purpose as he encourages the guests to be enquiring and seek out the names themselves. A fantastic list of dry zone trees as well as some not-so-common varieties. A tree hugger's delight. Yohan also encourages many butterflies on the property with a whole host of larval and nectar plants. His little jungle patches also encourages birds. We were lucky to see the Slaty-legged crake one evening.

Zuerst einmal das Positive: Das Team war sehr herzlich und wir haben uns durch alle Mitarbeiter gleich sehr willkommen gefühlt. Aber einige Sachen haben nicht gepasst: (1) sehr abgelegen (einerseits schön weil ruhig, andererseits immer lange Fahrten) (2) Strand weiter weg als beschrieben + man darf/kann hier nicht schwimmen, weil die Strömung zu gefährlich ist (auch laut Mitarbeiter - diese haben gewarnt nicht ins Wasser zu gehen) daher muss man viel Geld für TukTuk-Fahrten zu Stränden zahlen (3) Sauberkeit! Eco bedeutet nicht schmutzig, wir hätten uns mehr erwartet. Gerade weil man Insekten und deren Exkremente nicht verhindern kann, wäre tägliches durchputzen das Mindeste gewesen. Wir haben zb. auch eine riesige Kakerlake im Zimmer gefunden. Am ersten Tag hatten wir außerdem Dreck im Bett. Nicht gerade einladend. Am Mosquito Netz oben liegen auch Insekten, wo man jeden Morgen hinaufblickt. Dieses war generell nicht richtig festgemacht, da es an einem Eck ein riesiges Loch hatte, wo Mosquitos reingeflogen sind. (4) Hatten ein kaputtes Klo bei dem das Wasser seitlich ausgeronnen ist - wir haben es am ersten Tag angesprochen aber es wurde nicht repariert, was zu Uringestank geführt hat. (5) In einem Zimmer konnten wir den Kasten nicht verwenden, da dieser im Outdoor Bad war und dieser zum einen schmutzig war und zum anderen Tiere darin rumkrochen. (6) Duschkopf hatte keinen richtigen Druck (natürlich leider oft zu erwarten in solchen Ländern) aber auch hier mangelnde Hygiene. Wir haben am 3. Tag selber um eine Reinigung und neue Handtücher bitten müssen. Die Handtücher wurden nicht ausgewechselt. (7) Hatten eine Massage, da wir zeitgleich eine haben wollten, musste eine Dae dazugeholt werden - diese hat mir bei der Kopfmassage gefühlt die Hälfte meiner Haare ausgerissen und hatte raue Hände. Schlussendlich haben wir am 4.ten Tag entschieden, eine andere Unterkunft zu buchen. Immerhin haben wir zumindest einen kleinen Teil unserer Zahlung zurückerhalten - Dank Shasheen, der wirklich ein extrem engagierter Mensch und Organisator ist und 2 unserer Ausflüge für uns arrangiert hat. Wir haben das Team wirklich ins Herz geschlossen, deswegen schreiben wir ungern diese Bewertung - aber wir hätten das alles gerne im Vorhinein gewusst und möchten anderen den Ärger ersparen.
