This is a review of staying at the Tontine as a hotel guest, not as a restaurant customer. The Tontine is an elegant and historic building in a prime location right next to the old iron bridge. Unfortunately it is very basic inside and in urgent need of improvements. Our room was spacious and clean and appeared to have been recently decorated. But the bathroom was cramped, the hot water intermittent, the toilet flush was unreliable. The curtains and pictures looked like they had been bought at Poundland. The wardrobe was a rough wooden frame. However the beds were comfortable - although only a single pillow was provided on each bed. The carpets in our room and throughout the building were thin and cheap. The stair carpets needed cleaning. There were various items, including paint tins, cluttering the areas at the bottom of the stairs. It appeared that redecorating had started but not been completed. We went into a large old room on the first floor and were shocked to find it full of dirty, broken furniture and rubbish. The "free" breakfast available before 9 a.m. was woeful. No tea or coffee available, no jam or marmalade, inedible fruit. No staff in sight. Apparently if you waited until 9 a m. somebody would be able to serve other breakfast items. There was almost no sign of any staff, with the exception of those working in the bar (which was busy at night). This hotel has a lot of potential but needs a major overhaul and more staff.
