They spend hours trying to catch hermit crabs and minnows while I catch up on my tan and favorite book. The fully equipped kitchen means we can save a fortune on restaurant meals and my teenagers can eat their late-night cereal and frozen pizza. We save buying the bulky but essential items such as napkins, tin foil, saran wrap, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies because the owner provides them as a convenience. And when you decide to eat out, the local restaurants are family-friendly, reasonably priced, and amazing.The Frequent Flyer from a Watersport EnthusiastThe Frequent Flyer has a grassy 1 acre Soundfront lot, a perfect rigging area for every water sport. The winds from the S to NNE are ideal for kiting and windsurfing on the Sound side. While it is possible to kiteboard on the inside of the bridge area, you will likely want to access the water west of the bridge. As winds go NE to SE, you can launch directly across the street on the Ocean side. The house includes a ground floor enclosed ‘man cave’ plus a storage room for equipment. There are equipment racks outside for drying and inside to lock up at night. A half bath and two showers are outside under the house, in addition to a cleaning station with a utility sink and hose. We can clean up our gear so that it is ready the next day. Rigging, launching, and storing your gear is a breeze at the Frequent Flyer. The ‘man cave’ also has a small bar, and a fridge which adds to the convenience factor. This house really caters to those who want access to the Sound and Ocean for watersports. When the wind is not blowing, the Frequent Flyer still delivers with 6 bikes for cruising the island, 3 kayaks, and 2 stand up paddleboards. And of course, no trip to Hatteras Island is complete without a visit to the local surf shops. Fortunately, Real Watersports, Kitty Hawk Kites, and other shops are all within a few miles.The Frequent Flyer from a Fishing PerspectiveWhy settle for the Ocean or Sound when you can have them both! The Frequent Flyer is located on a very narrow segment of the island providing access to both Ocean and Sound fishing. If your target is inlet fishing, “Oregon Inlet” and the “New New Inlet” are just north of the Frequent Flyer. Convenient storage areas make unloading and storing your gear simple. A deluxe, outdoor fish-cleaning table makes prep a breeze. Bring your casting net as bait can easily be caught along the shore of the Sound. If you prefer to buy bait or need to update your fishing gear, several bait and tackle shops are just down the street including, Hatteras Jack.Offshore Fishing Charters are available from nearby Oregon Inlet or head south to the Hatteras Inlet. In fact the cottage is built by the site of the traditional homestead and resting place of some of the original settlers in the area. Their homestead lasted hundreds of years on the high ground by the live oaks, with the land where Pelican Point now stands serving as the family farm and route to the wetlands and sound for hunting and fishing. Although the original homestead has made way for development, some of the descendants still live near Pelican Point and are great neighbors with wonderful stories to tell! To help make your stay as enjoyable and relaxed as possible, we have teamed with Dawn Waldrop a premier property manager and owner of Black Dog Harbor Services (BDHS), based next door to Pelican Point. BDHS will clean and prepare Pelican Point for your arrival; provide bed linens and make the beds; and stock the house with an initial supply of paper towels, toilet paper, dish detergent and trash bags to get you started.
