The Higher Ground Hotel was one of the best hotel stays I've had. We were 4 women traveling together. The hotel is right across the street from Truman's home. The rooms were spotless and the owners friendly. What we enjoyed the most was sitting in the beautiful garden with flowers and a waterfall.

Such a beautiful place rooms were extra clean, breakfast had delicious coffee and sausage eggs toast or muffins. We were in town for a Chiefs game, we used Uber very reasonable price going and coming back to hotel if you can wait about an hour for uber, the price goes down a lot if you wait a little bit, we are staying at this same hotel for 2 more games! Great security of the parking lot and ground, directly across from Harry Truman’s home!looking forward to going back!

We had a very pleasant stay at the HIgher Ground, perfect location, very comfortable, nice breakfast and friendly staff. They even went out of their way to make pancakes for my son. Across the street from the Truman House and it was nice not to be in an anonymous hotel.

We arrived and the garden area was perfect for relaxing! Our room even had a skylight! So nice! We will stay again ! The garden area was spectacular our room and all areas were exceptionally clean. Attention to details! Even a prayer on our bed

Very clean, quiet, kind of unique. Very different from the larger big name hotels. The garden is lovely, a nice place to sit and read. Breakfast is included and also parking is free. Just across the street from Harry and Bess's home and a short drive to the Truman Museum and Library.

We were in Independence MO to visit the NPS Truman site. We booked Higher Ground as it is across the street from the Truman's home. Independence is a town that seems to be trying to improve its hospitality with a great ice cream shop, a brew pub and upscale restaurant. This charming boutique style hotel provides all the amenities of major hotels at a reasonable price. The owners are on site and hands on. Our room was comfortable and clean; service was good; breakfast was comparable to the buffet at other mid priced chain hotels. The private garden offers a place to relax in mild weather. The enchanting décor is hand painted by the owner

My husband and I stayed here when we attended an event in Independence. We were pretty excited about the reviews for this place as well as the prospect of it being unique. Our stay wasn't bad. The bed was VERY comfortable and that was the best part. The room was clean too, although a bit worn in spots. We weren't sure how to get the room cooler as we both like it more on the chilly side even though we tried to adjust the temperature on an older thermostat, but don't know if it changed it or not. Breakfast was not so great...just not many options! I was okay with my bowl of raisin brand and a couple of sausage links. The location was good, too, as it didn't feel like it was in a bad area at all. Plus, the hotel was quiet and that was nice when we returned from our event. Overall, if the temperature adjustment was better in the room and the breakfast was better? It would up my rating. Not bad...just adequate.

Absolutely darling quirky hotel. Very very clean. Old office building So different levels fun. Wonderful garden to eat in or read. Nice hot breakfast Would absolutely use again. Just abit off the main drag but so worth it

I stayed at Higher Ground during a Midwestern tour of Presidential sites. How cool to be able to stay directly across the street from the Truman home! I enjoyed its retro atmosphere, especially getting a key rather than a plastic card to access my room. My room was quite cozy and there are comfortable lounges on both the first and second floor, with ample opportunity to socialize with other guests. My hosts were very accommodating and provided breakfast. It felt more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. I only stayed one night, but I will definitely stay here again if I ever return to Independence.
