“You have to leave” After a long day of driving through the Lower Zambezi National Park in our camping vehicle, we wanted to spend the night at the campsite of Mvuu lodge on the banks of the Zambezi river in Zambia. The sun was about to set soon and we were relieved to reach the entrance to Mvuu campsite in order to set up camp as fast as possible before it was dark. At the entrance we met a staff member and asked, if it would be ok to first set up camp and check in at the reception afterwards. He said no problem and pointed us into the direction to the campsite. Unfortunately none of the campsites were right at the river but behind the chalets. We looked around for a suitable camping spot until the campsite attendant told us that we should not walk around, because of the dangerous elephants who killed a visitor not too long ago at their campsite. The attendant showed us a spot and started to bring some firewood. After 10 minutes we were ready to go to the reception. On the way there we met a man, who said he is the Manager of the Lodge (Mr. Nibby) and asked what we were doing here. We said we are camping have found our spot and wanted to check in. For some unknown reason the Manager was not happy and quite unfriendly. He asked, why we did go to the campsite and not to the reception first. I told him, that we asked his staff for permission prior and were shown to the campsite. He said there were other guests coming and that there was no space for us and continued with the words “You have to leave”. I was flabbergasted - living, working and travelling all these years through Southern Africa, I have never met such an unhospitable person. He continued arguing that we should not have gone to the campsite and was not interested that his own staff member directed us there. At that time it was dark. The campsite area was huge and we asked, if we could stay at another spot. He said there is no space – we should leave! No alternative was offered, not even a space at the corner of their big campground or at one of the chalets. There was no other campsite around in that area and this guy did sent us finding another place leaving us no other option but to wild camp. I have never written a review before, this is my first time because I did find this incident unbelievable. This man should change his job – hospitality is not for him!
