The Mill House did not live up to the photos on the website. It presented as derelict and unloved. The gardens over grown and uncared for. We had to phone for the code for our room, which was supposed to be sent the day before our arrival. Our room was clean and tidy with a dated 70s vibe. There was no guest information just instructions like "don't forget your phone charger" and "10 am vacate otherwise you will be charged extra" taped to the walls. My first instinct was to run for the hills. However, our stay was for one night, so we decided to embrace the bizarre experience of this place. We survived the night despite the electronic door lock going off advising "wrong code", in the middle of the night, was someone trying to come in, we will never know as this stay was a one-off!

arrived in darkness and there was a couple about to leave due to the conditions, no staff on arrival no staff at all, place in darkness, the room was not a deluxe, no milk, the place is in need of a makeover , run from Christchurch, never again, no refund or discount, slept on the couch :_

Appalling. No-one to receive us. The place looked abandoned. We had to call the number and it took sometime to understand where our room was and how to get in. The property is in a state of compete neglect. That said, the room was spacious and clean but smelled musky and was scattered with dead flies.We were glad to leave. Very disappointing. Don't belive the photos on the website - appear to have been taken in better times.

We reserved months in advance. Upon arriving, we found the place empty and a CLOSED sign on the door. We followed the instructions on the sign and went to the other establishment... only to find that there were no rooms there either. The owner ended up putting us in an empty old house. He then came in and wrenched on the hot water heater for a while until he got the hot water running. I asked him if we could get some bottled water. Nope. We arrived in the evening, expecting a hotel with a restaurant and other ammenities (bottled water, etc). We had 2 hungry kids and nowhere for miles to get food. When the Mill House was closed, the owner should've called us. He did not. He could've emailed us. He did not. He could've reached us through the booking agent. He did not. We arrived in the early evening and left at dawn. The owner offered no compensation. We did receive a refund through the booking agent.

We were able to book, and receive confirmation for our stay. Unfortunately when we arrived at the Mill House at 8pm in the evening the property was in darkness and no-one around. A note on the door directed us to make contact with another accommodation provider, who was fortunately able to accommodate us. This experience turned an anticipated night away into a stressful experience. It also meant that we missed our dinner reservation and ended up needing to get takeaways in Oamaru.
