Castello di Petroia Dimora d'Epoca

I can't say enough about what a wonderful stay we had here. I unfortunately broke my foot on day 2 of the trip, and the entire staff bent over backwards to help us get to the hospital, change rooms, extend our stay, etc. They provided what we needed at every turn, and I will be forever grateful. We ate dinner at the lodging every night, and it was wonderful -- so much easier than driving out to find a restaurant at night. Overall, just a lovely stay, and the entire staff went out of their way to treat us well. That's something you don't often find these days.

Beautiful property. It is a family property with an addition of guest rooms in differents parts of the castle. We enjoyed the stay and the friendly staff was always helpful. There is a very good restaurant. Cons, because it is a small property, some problems cannot be solved immediately, but the workers always were helpful and tried to upgrade the room even under a small problem, that could affect our excellent experience. one personal highlight: One day we bought some cheese and snacks as well as a prosecco bottle and seat outside, then Paolo, the restaurant manager, saw us an provided an ice bucket as well as candles (it was too dark) and table service, big detail The castle and its location are a dream, in the middle of nowhere, but close to main Umbria points of interest.

Three couples, cousins, stayed two nights at the Castello to explore Assisi and Gubbio. My wife and I and our young children stayed at the castle in 1998. We all thought it was special. Since then we have now been again twice and the experience has only gotten better and better! Highly recommend for an extremely unique experience in Umbria with much to see a in the area.

My mother and I spent 4 nights at the Castello di Petroia in July 2022. My experience was completely magical. We were visiting during a historic heat wave ( unfortunately) with highs 104 F! ) The staff did everything possible to keep us cool- taking special care to offer my mother extra fans. The rooms remained a comfortable cool temperature in spite of the heat. I would imagine during normal weather the heat would not be a problem at all as there are wonderful breezes off the valley. The castle feels like a real castle! It is like staying in a slice of history but most of the rooms are quite modern. The grounds are beautiful with magnificent views of the hillside. The pool is lovely and refreshing- a short walk down hill from the castle. There are lovely trails to explore but since the castle is at the top of the hill-- what goes down must come back up :) The staff of the castle was incredibly kind and accommodating. They arranged a taxi to Gubbio for a day visit ( definitely recommend! 20 min away). The restaurant was lovely for dinner. We ate there all 4 nights. There was plenty variety on the menu not to duplicate. the food was delicious and very authentic---quite reasonable prices and exquisite wines. one night there was a BBQ of roasted meats ( amazing) and then a star gazing lecture. During the summer they serve dinner outside on the patio in between the castle buildings- just lovely. The breakfast is a large spread. they do not serve lunch at the castle- but i would stash away a small plate of meat, cheese and fruit in my mini-fridge for later. that was quite sufficient. I also enjoyed a morning of truffle hunting with Stella-- it was a super fun experience! It is definitely an active experience on the steep hiking trails. Castello di Petroia is one of the top places I have stayed in Italy. It is still family owned. We would see the owners at dinner every night-- it really felt like you were there as their special guest. This is the hotel to visit if you want to take in the slow pace of Umbria ( which is what it is all about!) Go and contemplate the history and beauty of this ancient land. Eat local food, drink delicious wine, hike in the hills and dream under the stars. I hope to return soon!

Very old castle, renovated. The best things are: very quiet in the Umbrian countryside, food is really outstanding. Rooms are okay, breakfast very good. The lady at the reception is the heart of the hotel. Service during dinner needs to be improved.
