If I could leave zero stars, I would. The hotel charged us for three bath towels they say we removed from the room, but the towels were not present when we checked in. We didn't report missing towels because we didn't need more than one. Our attempts to have the fallacious charge reversed have been futile. This is a blatant money-grab by hotel management. While the manager was careful to not accuse us of lying (we are not), she repeatedly stated she trusts her housekeeper. (News flash to the manager: housekeeping staffers are not the only employees who have access to the rooms.) Her speech was so rehearsed we suspect she commits this fraud with other guests all the time. Or she's covering for a dishonest employee and is too lazy to launch a real investigation. It's easier to charge honest, unsuspecting guests whose credit card numbers she already has on file. The refrigerator was turned off when we arrived--what? Why? The control is behind the unit, so we had to pull it out of the cabinet to turn it on. (Gee, did the maintenance person work on it, have a leak and clean up the mess with the three missing towels? Hmmm ...) The air conditioner is full of mold, so the room smells odd and the air quality is terrible for anyone with allergies and asthma. The mattresses feel like Jello and weren't kind to our backs. Pillow are thin and uncomfortable. We killed a few insects scurrying around. There was no "Do Not Disturb" sign available in the room. The "breakfast" is limited to a few paltry options--Belgian waffle, biscuits and gravy, yogurt, cereal, toast--not even a hard-boiled egg or fruit of any sort. Sadly, there are few lodging options in this part of the state. I recommend exploring ALL other choices before staying here. Then, if you do stay, make someone from the front desk accompany you to your room for an inventory to ensure you aren't charged for something you truly didn't take. At this time, the AmericInn in Maquoketa has the same owner, so watch your back there, too.
