Just returned from a week, all inclusive, standard room (garden view) at the Royal Kathargo in Djerba. This, in my opinion, is my honest review. Overall it’s an ok complex, relatively tidy, good sized main pool and the lobby lulls you into a false sense of security. On the negative side… The cells are dingy, broken toilet seat, a bath/shower that really needs a ladder it’s that high! Make sure you pack a multi adapter as there’s one free socket. We booked a room for 3, 2 adults 1 child. The second bed, is actually a bench seat and you need to remove the cover. The “garden view” is quite a generous description of a couple of trees in a small square of sand. There’s absolutely no outside space with the room so once you’re in, you’re in. Food is available. I can’t be more specific because it’s either an unlabelled tray of something or the translation needs a little work. I’m not sure what crunchy soup or carrot ice cream are but they don’t sound appealing. I stuck with bread for the last couple of days. Pool wise, it’s a good size, relatively clean with the standard virtually all toweled up beds from 6am onwards. Animation team lurk around most of the day, but if you’re English don’t worry some will go out of their way to avoid you. Pool bar wise, some good staff badly let down by the disinterested or the one individual who gladly informed me that my regional accent was one of his most hated. Not the top one, that was reserved for visitors from Birmingham. Sorry Brummies! Quite the welcome to our first full day there. Aside from that, it’s in the middle of nowhere, transfer back to the airport was a very long slog through the wonderful landscape where the national flower appears to be discarded plastic bottles or bags of rubbish. I’d start on the check in and departures at the airport but at this point I can’t be bothered. Glad to be home!

Hotel was fantastic and so were the staff were really friendly. Rooms were clean and so was the pools. The animation team were really good and access to the private beach which was also clean and well kept including the grounds which was larger than we expected. Lots to do including the spa, games, shops and even an onsite medical unit with doctor should you need one! Highly recommend this and could easily be a 5 star hotel with a few small tweaks.

If you have booked a holiday here, you will have an ok time. If not, read below before you consider booking. Read the section on MUSIC before you book to see if this is what you want... Arrival - Took 45 minutes to check in in an empty foyer at 23.30. They insisted on having a printed copy of a voucher - I was never sent one from Easyjet. The children were shattered and we had to sit and wait until I trawled for something they would accept. They don't allocate rooms until you arrive. Luckily we didn't need to move after 1 night - but other people did. Pool - lovely lagoon style. Half the pool can be stood up in by kids. I could stand everywhere (on tips). Deep end is 1.55m. There are lifeguards. Two sets of toilets and a pool bar close. Sunbeds - They are all gone by 7am. Get up early - we set an alarm for 6.30am. Music - it has a 'festival' feel where the base line from the neighbouring bar is competing with the music from this hotel. Honestly, this was the worst part. By the end of day 3, I didn’t want to sit by the pool in the afternoon anymore. It feels like a Saturday night at Wetherspoons. Food - queues in high season but to be expected. I really enjoyed the food, however I'm not picky. Some nights my children struggled to find food they liked. They don't do chips very often and never in the evening (if that's your normal back up). Drink - served in tiny cups. Please take your own cup as they will fill it. Animation team - they are really good. Everyone joins in. It is all in French though and no timetable on a board so no idea what is going on when. They do speak English if you ask them to. Rooms - I love the maze layout and traditional style. Always cleaned and air con worked. Beach- lovely, warm, lovely views but water not as clear as I thought it would be. There is a beach bar but they didn't serve alcohol and never had ice. Staff - very geared towards French clientele. The only time this is a problem is for the animation team. They will talk in French for a minute and say 3 words in English. Pirate Boat Trip - Got on a party boat with no where to sit, went to a rammed beach with people trying to sell you stuff constantly literally never stopping, had to pay for the loungers and parasol, only there until 12.15 as you had to walk back for a pirate show consisting of a pirate guy dropping a stick and getting people to try to catch it. Honestly, worst trip I've been on. Don't bother Overall, I would say this has a butlins feel to it. Constant noise and busyness. I prefer my holidays to be more relaxing and quiet so would not return.

We arrived just before midnight and I must say the lack of welcome, information and the delays checking in really put me off. I have never experienced a check in like it. I can only assume the guy checking us in (eventually) was the night manager. We were one of two parties arriving at that time, others arrived whilst we waited to be processed. The "manager" walked towards us demanding passports and a voucher. We knew nothing about a voucher (we provided a printed copy of our confirmation) and as at that time there had been no introduction and he could have been anyone he definitely wasn't walking away with our passports. We eventually, some 45 mins to an hour after arriving got checked in but we wouldn't let our passports out of our sight whilst this was completed. The following morning we took an early walk around the grounds and the pools etc before breakfast (we hadn't been told at check in when the meal times were or where the restaurant was either). It became apparent at the poolside that if you want a sunbed you need to get up early and I mean before 6.00 a.m. to reserve one. The pools were great and the animation team, whilst we didn't wish to take part were always happy, friendly and inviting. The beach was spotlessly clean and connected to this hotel. The main pool is protected by a lifeguard and we witnessed him having to jump in to bring a young girl to the side. He did this without hesitation by dropping his phone on the floor and just going for it. I think he may even have still had his wallet in his shorts pocket. We have never seen a more alert poolside lifeguard at any hotel we have stayed at. The buffet restaurant and the food in it was okay. There was always something to choose from. I can recommend the freshly cooked doughnuts for breakfast with a cafe au lait from the machine. We booked both the Italian restaurant (Venus) and the Berber experience too. We also chose to eat lunch at the smaller 5 Continents restaurant. Each of these are bookable using the touch screen just to the right of the reception desk and are included in the All Inclusive offering. Our favourite was the Italian Restaurant and our fantastic, happy and very friendly waiter Ahmed. Great service and always with a smile or a laugh. So despite the poor start we were very happy with this hotel and the staff so much so that we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thanks for a great week where we did absolutely nothing, just what we wanted and needed. Make sure you bring 2 copies of your confirmation with your return flight details on, one as a voucher when checking in and the other to get access to the airport when flying home.

This is our third stay in beautiful and sunny Royal Karthago. Many thanks to the reception staff, bars, restaurants, garden staff and cleaning crew - everyone is very nice, polite and always helpful. A beautiful garden and wonderful rooms in white houses are our oasis for a wonderful rest. Now, unfortunately, there are minuses :( This time we came with friends who wanted to see the hotel that we like so much and the animations that we praised so much. Everything is new now, especially the Farm team. Unfortunately, the team leaders do not even have 10% of the high level of Mario or Baroche - remember that people who do not speak French also come to this hotel - and it is as if the people responsible for the teams do not remember this very important fact or are not interested at all The animation team employed by the hotel still maintains a high level, unfortunately in the FARM team the situation is worse. Unfortunately, I have to mention Haazem by name - he offers to go to a club for 30 euros - the price supposedly includes a taxi, entry and a drink, which is a lie. We went to this club - taxi 10 diners, free entry - There were people there with animators. They were surprised when we said that the entrance was free. They were also upset because there was no free drink and they still had to pay for everyone. The FARM boss knows about everything and does nothing about it. Events like BINGO run by her are in French even though Poles also bought coupons - only the animators' attention made her start speaking English - previously when Kris, Baroche or Zizu ran Bingo there was no such problem. Wonderful Royal, please do something because a lot of English-speaking people complain about the hotel during their stay and on the plane back.

The hotel was lovely- clean and well-maintained, although some of the decor was a little dated. Food and drink was plentiful with 3 buffets a day and the opportunity to eat at the on-site Italian and Tunisian restaurants during your stay. The thing that made this hotel so lovely though was the staff- from the cleaners to the bar staff and the animation team, everyone we came across was friendly and enthusiastic. They encouraged you to join in the wide range of activities but there was never any pressure, just a friendly, kind atmosphere and the chance to find a nice quiet spot to relax in of you preferred. If you’re looking for a well-run, reasonably priced all-inclusive hotel in a predominantly French-speaking resort, this is a very good choice!

Our honest review. Room comfortable and clean.Animation team happy to chat and like to chat in English as the hotel is mainly French. Bar staff seem to have an issue with the English and either serve you begrudgingly or just walk off with the exception of a couple. Food is ok and you will not starve. Fresh show cooking each evening. We tried the Italian but walked out after the first 2 courses. May of been us but others also doing the same. You can only have wine or water with the meal also.Pool towels have to be paid for. Beach is a nice break from the pool and cleaned each morning. We have had a good week and good value for the money. Just not sure it's for the English and think once busier could be worse. Recommend the day tour was good to see the island and the crocodiles.

We chose Hotel Royal on the recommendation of our friends. The hotel is wonderful, beautiful garden which we fell in love with. Very nice service from the people responsible for cleaning to the bartenders, waiters, reception staff. Everyone is incredibly nice and friendly, always with a smile on their face. The animation team is wonderful and smiling. Special thanks to Willy, Shadow, Baroche and the amazing Dina. Unfortunately there is one person who is very unprofessional in the animation team. It's about Adele. He had lunch and dinner with us a two times, he complained that he was getting negative reviews. He showed a lot of interest in our daughter which my husband didn't like. He invited our daughter to go outside the hotel, but she did not agree. This is where the problems started, after she refusal he stopped talking to us. He turned his head the other way when he saw us. Adele is good at activities during the day but his approach is very unprofessional. How can you treat guests like that? Just because our daughter didn't want to go on a date with him? Someone should talk to him. Luckily it was just one person. The rest of the team is fantastic. Everyone made sure we had a smile on our face. Please thank all the kitchen staff for the wonderful meals. We love Royal Karthag food. Thank you Royal for amazing holiday.

The say was alright but there were definitely things to improve and some stuff that they can't control that wasn't to my liking. The beach was great, very clean and a great view and not too busy. The room was small, not many accessible plugsockets of your in a room with one of the bunk beds. Hard to find the room as the layout is messy however the signposts do help. Bathroom is good, great water pressure and overall a good space. Annoying blinking light from the smoke detector that we didn't like. The pool is clean and good, great shade from the sun and not too loud apart from when the classes are on at which point the music is too loud. Overall I'd rate the experience between a 5 and 6 out of 10, if your looking for a tourist place then this isnt for you but if you want a more rural and hotel based holiday then this is for you. Food isnt great but it's alright and the dinner isn't until 7pm which could be a bit late for some people however we didn't have a problem with it. Staff are all nice however the people trying to sell you excursions are a bit annoying. It's around 50 minutes from the airport by bus and there's not much room to go into the town as travel is limited. The bar has mainly spirits which was ok.
