We stayed at the Posta Zirm for a week in July. We had heard about Corvara from a friend, and we found Posta Zirm on TripAdvisor. We had stayed in family-run Alpine hotels elsewhere, and we knew that they tend to be very charming, with excellent hospitality. Posta Zirm did not disappoint! It’s one of the best places I have ever stayed. For my taste, it is the right combination of very nice but not too fancy, and the service and location are excellent. First of all, Corvara is a dream spot for a holiday in the Dolomites. From Corvara you can take lifts up three different hills that you can use as the base for hiking. The public bus service originates right outside the hotel and will take you to several other nearby trailheads. If you have a car, you can easily get to still others. Even without leaving the hotel, the views are spectacular. We decided not to get a rental car for our trip because we figured it would just sit around most of the time. Instead we traveled to Bolzano by train and then by private taxi to Corvara. It’s also possible to get there by public bus, but it takes a lot longer. The bus is very inexpensive. The taxi is more expensive, but far cheaper than renting a car that you won’t need once you arrive. The hotel has the contact info for a taxi service on its website, but if you ask them for info they will respond quickly with helpful information. It may seem difficult to get there, but it’s really not so hard if you ask for advice. And spending time in Corvara is certainly worth the trouble of getting there. Posta Zirm offers guided hikes three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday). We checked in and out Saturday, which meant we missed the Saturday hike. We would be sure to join as many of the guided hikes as possible in the future. The hike was wonderful, with only a small group of hikers and a guide who was skilled at making the trip work for the whole group, i.e. both fast and slow walkers. The route was spectacular. You can see from the hotel’s website that they are ready to provide all kinds of advice about activities such as hiking and biking. If you are looking for such advice it is important to ask when you arrive and they will be extremely helpful. If you don’t ask, they might not think to tell you about everything you want to know. Meals were wonderful. I mentioned previously that we have stayed in family-run hotels in several places in the Alps, and they often come with a half-board plan that includes breakfast and dinner. We love not having to worry about finding a place to go out. Also, at the end of a long day of hiking, it’s nice to relax, put on your indoor clothes, and not have to venture out again. We sometimes worry about the possibility that the food will get repetitive if we eat at the same place every night for a week, but that was not the case. Every night the food has a different style, and every night there are at least two options to choose from for each of th
