The Ees Wyke Country House offers peace and comfort in a spectacular setting overlooking Esthwaite Water. The view, which embraces the Langdale Pikes, Scafell Pike and Coniston Old Man, never failed to impress during the two days we spent there this week. The house itself is airy, comfortably furnished and immaculate. Our room ("Sunshine") was undeniably on the small side, but perfectly adequate and spotlessly clean. (It was serviced very thoroughly - not subject to a mere flick around - after day one.) But after the view it is the food which will remain in my memory. Having experienced it I was astonished to learn that the kitchen is a single-handed operation. A short but imaginative menu, which changes daily, offers dishes produced to a standard which would command considerably higher prices elsewhere. The dining room is elegant, and the well spaced tables are covered with starched white linen. There is no background music. It is common to heap praise on a place where you have enjoyed yourself, and the result is often exaggeration. However, it is simply true true that the breakfast on offer at Ees Wyke is the most lavish and most appetising I have ever experienced. The owner, Richard, who is also Chef, is a likeable, unassuming man with a quiet sense of humour. Ees Wyke is not merely an escape from the lunacies of modern life: it is an escape from the lunacies of a commercialised Lake District. Long may it continue.
