Ernespie House Hotel

We stayed at Ernespie House Hotel as we had a birthday to attend in the nearby town. We live local in Dumfries and Galloway and had passed the hotel lots of times - but wow were we blown away. Right off the bat the staff were welcoming and warm, the hotel itself has that grandeur that's not 'stuffy', but actually somehow homely and comfortable while also being beautiful. The views alone out the restaurant windows are to die for. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and it was hands down the best food we've had in Dumfries and Galloway. We tried both traditional with a steak pie and mash and off continent with a curry and rice and found both to be of exceptional standard - first time we've ate somewhere and actively talked about it all night and how good it was. The stay overnight was fantastic. Our room was warm, the bed was massive which was great, and so comfortable. There was a sofa and coffee table in the room which made it really nice to spend time in because you weren't forced to be sitting on beds or feeling like you were cramped in. The room was spacious and beautifully decorated, plenty of power points and surfaces for putting things and very very clean. Because it's set back out of the main town of Castle Douglas it's also really quiet, the walk up and down the drive is really nice for a wee dose of fresh air! We then had breakfast which was again beautifully done. Everything you'd expect was available including plenty of tea, coffee and toast. Because we were checking out the Sunday we decided to stay on for their lunch carvery and were not disappointed. Once again the food was out of this world. The carvery offered some light starter options as well as alternative mains if you didn't want the traditional carvery, but we did. Genuinely this is the first roast dinner I have eaten in a restaurant setting I was more than happy to pay for - it had everything you'd expect in a homemade roast including homemade Yorkshire puddings, proper gravy and crispy, tasty roast potatoes. Topped that off with their scottish tablet sundae which was so moreish. So, what initially was a plan for a convenient place to stop off nearby to the party has been a pleasant surprise and now a firm favourite that will see our return custom time and again from now on!

Went for the carvery as advertised at the end of the drive. Carvery was off however we had the Sunday roast. The meat was okay; beef or pork. The carrots and mash were possibly freshly cooked. The Yorkshire pudding and toast potatoes were as tough as old boots. The rest of the vegetables were reheated red cabbage, mush that passed for cauliflower cheese and tough green beans. The waitress constantly called all customers lovelies which became very annoying to listen to and we left after the main course.

We have now stayed at this hotel several times and enjoyed every visit. You arrive at the hotel along a driveway lined with mature trees and on this occasion we were fortunate to see a rabbit and squirrels among the trees. Guests can expect a warm welcome when they arrive and are shown to their room with an offer of help with luggage. We have now stayed in a variety of rooms and each one has everything you need for your stay - comfortable bed, toiletries and a hospitality tray. The staff work as a team and are all friendly and helpful under the watchful eye of the attentive owner who is around to ensure his guests get personal attention. We ate in the hotel each night of our stay and enjoyed every meal from the varied and very reasonably priced menu.

Conveniently situated a short drive from Castle Douglas, this hotel is set in a beautiful rural location. The winding driveway from the main road weaves beneath old and imposing trees. The owner welcomed us on arrival and explained that renovations were currently in progress. Our room was at the rear of the property and a little on the small side, but perfectly adequate. We took the opportunity to explore the grounds and admire the landscape. We enjoyed our breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast and smoked salmon. All staff were pleasant and friendly.

The views from the hotel are amazing . The staff and very friendly , informative and helpful . Our room was very spacious with views over the fields (room 20.) Very clean and tidy . Breakfast very good and sets you up for the day . Pre dinner cocktails sitting in the garden an added bonus . Dinner exceptional and in particular the curries ! Would highly recommend staying at Ernespie again . Anyone travelling with children the neighbouring Ernespie Farm and play area is ideal . Thank you Ernespie . Aly & Greg

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. This is a family run hotel and the staff are exceptional. They work so hard to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The hotel is in beautiful grounds and we were upgraded to the best room in the hotel which was really appreciated. The hotel is immaculately clean, the super king bed was extremely comfortable and the room had lovely extras such as canned water, tea and coffee, toiletries and biscuits. The food is cooked to order and is extremely fresh and delicious. The views were beautiful and the hotel is only a short walk into town. We would definitely recommend this hotel - it was fantastic value for money and we had a great time.
