The Sun Hotel

My room was lovely to look at and the bed and towels were nice. There were a few tweaks I’d make - the toilet had not been flushed. There was no milk in the fridge although I was told there was. And there was no waste paper basket in the room. After I had checked in I was told that it got noisy outside and would quieten down at midnight. It was a Friday night and it was noisy as the bar up the road played loud music. However I did sleep very well. Had a bit of trouble getting out of the building as the door was locked but another guest helped me.

Positives: gorgeous room ( stayed in the sun room) very clean, and great location in centre of the town, it’s a old building, so there are beams, winding narrow corridors / stairs etc, which for us added to the charm. complimentary continental breakfast with the tea/ coffee, super friendly staff, and what seems to be a very popular Spanish restaurant downstairs that the hotel also run. Negatives: shower did not work, bed linen was utterly horrible, and did not match the quality of the room - nylon polyester duvet cover, urgh! Yes, there was some outside noise in the late evening because of the location, but was quiet after 23:00 and did not bother us, but might be a negative for some people

Small hotel located upstairs from the el sold tapas restaurant. I had a standard double, the pilgrims room whilst fine for one would be too small for 2. However the room had a real bed, not a divan so storage space under the bed. Room contained a small cupboard with a safe. Also in room was a hairdryer and minibar. This was useful to keep food in. Whilst the hotel does not serve breakfast formally, instead there are packets of cereal and bowls with fresh milk. Bathroom is a shower room, plenty of hot water. Towels too small. Stayed a Saturday night and it was noisy but hotel is in the middle of the centre, surrounding area has lots of bars and restaurants. Location around the corner from cathedral, walking distance to tourist attractions.

The uniqueness and history of this hotel when combined with the service and friendliness of the staff cannot be overstated. The rooms have been "renovated" whilst retaining all the character of the original and are comfortable and provide everything one needs. I stayed in the Cathedral Room and was charmed by the maze of winding stairs and changes in floor levels as I was lead to the top of the building. I was warned that the retention of the historic windows could lead to noise transmission from the street below. They were not wrong. However, a small price to pay for the historic vibe of the place. The unexpected El Sol tapas bar was delightful and the food the best Spanish cuisine I've had outside Spain.

Had a very comfortable 3 night stay at the Sun Hotel, that is full of character and very clean, which is priority for me when booking a hotel stay. The breakfast was very tasty and plentiful, offering choices of Full English, Vegetarian or cereal. Waiter was also happy to provide toast/jam/fruit with the cereal that I requested on one of the mornings. Location is perfect, short stroll to high street and around the corner from Cathedral - loved hearing the church bells ringing ! Had dinner at the Tapas restaurant on our last night, so glad we did as the dishes were amazingly tasty and very reasonably priced for the large portions. A big thankyou to Jerry the Chef for the recommendations. I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel and restaurant to my friends and family and hope to go back there one day.

Our one night at Sun Hotel was a superb experience in service, uniqueness, accommodations, and fine dining. Corina greeted us with a tour of this historic old hotel & its legends. The room was cozy, clean, and comfortable. Jerry the proprietor, served as professional tapas chef in the dining room. We let him bring out many specialty tapas, all superb (& rare to find a Spanish restaurant in the heart of old Canterbury). Their staff went out of their way to help us (item left in room, carried suitcases 2 blocks away after checkout for our convenience. An exceptional value and experience!
