The hotel itself was lovely, our room was modern, clean with a great sea view. The hotel has an indoor and outdoor pool, we used the outdoor pool quite a bit, also clean and modern. There were plenty of sun loungers, both by the pool and on several lido decks overlooking the sea, however a number of lido decks and access to a small beach area were closed off, it looked like they hadn't been open for some time. The only downside to this hotel was the restaurant, the hotel is part of a larger complex and you have to use the restaurant in the Roco Mar hotel nextdoor if you are half-board. We found the restaurant to be very impersonal, on our first night it was fairly chaotic, we weren't sure whether we should seat ourselves, how the buffet worked, how to order drinks etc the staff were busy rushing around so we felt a little lost. The food in the restaurant is buffet food which we were never that impressed with either. We did visit the Lee Hamilton snack bar most evenings for cocktails. This is another little cafe on the hotel site. The two ladies who worked in there were really friendly and welcoming, we did enjoy our evenings here. On our last night we chose to miss our half-board meal and ate here instead, it's also a steak house, the food was amazing and the portions were large! Another plus point of the hotel was on my birthday, they sent a bottle of sparkling wine to our room as a gift, this was a lovely gesture. Canico itself is a little quiet, but there are regular busses to Funchal for €2.20. To wrap up, a lovely hotel, but the restaurant could do with being more organised and welcoming
