The reviews were polarised, but we came with an open mind. I have not commented until we sampled several other Sri Lankan hotels. After staying in 3 further hotels, my reflection will be fair The grounds and pool are appealing and well cared for, it is a serene setting. The accommodation, tucked away in thick vegetation is delightful. The rooms are basic, but I was happy with their rustic charm. They were clean with super linen, regularly changed. Plenty of hot water, but rain water also came from above when it rained. We found the catering disappointing: this lets the hotel down and contrast our experiences in other Sri Lankan hotels. The variety was limited, the tureens soon became empty, the food temperature was rarely hot. The bread was usually dry and avoided by most. I even saw a manager pick up a couple of rolls by hand and return to their baskets. What left me aghast was seeing managers collecting their food and eating, when clearly staff needed prompting to do their jobs. There were several young staff and trainees who try to please, but they need set higher expectations by management and their actions monitored. All is too laid back, come on Camelia, raise your game, you could be a wonderful oasis travellers would love.
