Cuti bersama refers to collective leave days designated by the Indonesian government alongside national public holidays. They are commonly placed around major religious and national celebrations to create longer holiday periods.

For travelers, these dates are important because they can lead to higher demand for flights, trains, hotels, and tourist attractions, particularly around Eid al-Fitr.

Major Religious Holidays in Indonesia

Bali

1. Eid al-Fitr (Idul Fitri)

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the most important celebrations for Muslims in Indonesia. Families traditionally gather, visit relatives, exchange greetings, and enjoy festive dishes.

The period is also associated with mudik, the annual tradition of returning to one's hometown. As a result, transportation hubs, roads, airports, and train stations can become extremely busy.

Travel tip: If you plan to travel around Eid, book flights, trains, and hotels well in advance.

2. Eid al-Adha (Idul Adha)

Eid al-Adha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. In Indonesia, the holiday is marked by special prayers and the Qurban tradition, in which livestock such as goats and cattle are sacrificed and the meat is distributed to communities.

It is also an important period for Muslims traveling to visit family or participate in religious activities.

3. Islamic New Year (1 Muharram)

The Islamic New Year marks the beginning of a new year in the Hijri calendar. In Indonesia, the occasion is generally observed through religious gatherings, prayers, lectures, and community events rather than large public celebrations.

4. Isra Mi'raj

Isra Mi'raj commemorates the Prophet Muhammad's night journey and ascension to heaven. The occasion is widely observed through religious ceremonies, prayers, and Islamic gatherings across Indonesia.

5. Prophet Muhammad's Birthday (Maulid Nabi)

Maulid Nabi commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad. Muslim communities across Indonesia may hold religious lectures, prayers, processions, and community gatherings to mark the occasion.

6. Nyepi – Balinese Saka New Year

Nyepi, also known as the Day of Silence, is one of the most distinctive religious celebrations in Indonesia. It marks the Balinese Saka New Year and is primarily observed in Bali.

During Nyepi, people traditionally refrain from activities such as traveling, working, entertainment, and lighting fires. Ngurah Rai International Airport also closes for approximately 24 hours, making this an important consideration for visitors.

7. Vesak Day

Vesak Day commemorates important events in the life of Gautama Buddha, including his birth, enlightenment, and death according to Buddhist tradition.

One of Indonesia's most famous Vesak celebrations takes place at Borobudur Temple in Central Java, where Buddhist ceremonies and lantern rituals attract visitors from Indonesia and abroad.

8. Good Friday

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is a national public holiday in Indonesia and is observed by Christian communities through church services, prayers, and religious ceremonies.

9. Ascension of Jesus Christ

This holiday commemorates the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven following his resurrection. Churches across Indonesia hold special worship services and religious gatherings.

10. Christmas Day

Christmas Day is celebrated by Christian communities throughout Indonesia on December 25. Churches hold special services, while shopping centers, hotels, and public spaces in major cities may feature Christmas decorations and events.

11. Chinese New Year (Imlek)

Although Chinese New Year is not a religious holiday in the same sense as the major faith-based holidays above, it is an important cultural celebration and a national public holiday in Indonesia.

Festivities commonly include family gatherings, temple visits, lion and dragon dances, and traditional food. Cities such as Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, and Medan often host notable celebrations.
