It was my first time renting a car abroad, and I was quite nervous. Following the instructions on Ctrip, I took my translated international driver's license and contract, asked a few people, and finally found the Avis pick-up point at Grand Central Station. The young man there was very serious and didn't waste any words. At first, he asked for my driver's license, and I gave him both the original and the translation. He threw it back, saying it wasn't correct. After a few words, I took it back and then asked for my bank card, which he then threw back, saying it was expired. Actually, it wasn't; the network was just unstable. I encountered a similar situation at the hotel later, and it worked fine after two transactions. After all that effort, he even made several phone calls to confirm my license was valid. Finally, with a very serious expression, he led us to the underground parking garage to pick up the car. The guy who inspected the car had a Southeast Asian feel to him; he was very enthusiastic, answered all my questions, and patiently explained everything. The best part was the car's excellent condition. I thought the cheap car I chose would be old, but it was brand new! The car was in superb condition. I drove very carefully on the way to Las Vegas and returned the car in San Francisco, only to be charged 7.8 euros in highway tolls. I guess I accidentally drove into the fast lane. Returning the car wasn't entirely smooth either. We ran into rush hour traffic restrictions and drove around the drop-off point many times. Finally, they called and told us we could just talk to the police and they'd let us in. Haha, I never knew that could be done! Returning the car was unexpectedly easy; the guy drove in, exchanged a few jokes, and told us we could go. He didn't check the fuel gauge, the car's condition, or ask for any receipts. Uh, 👍
